King Togee
King Togee's Headstone.
For those with a keen interest in Aboriginal history, the headstone of King Togee is to be found 29 km west of Coolah on the left-hand side of the Neilrex Rd, just past the 'Langdon' homestead. There is little to see other than a weather-worn sandstone headstone surrounded by four white posts with a sign overhead reading: 'TOGEE KING OF THE BUTHEROE TRIBE'. King Togee was friendly with the early settlers but was speared to death by a young man named Cuttabushwho later became the king of a Coonabarabran sub-tribe
The Gilgandra Land Council decided that the site of the Togee Headstone was of sufficient importance to warrant the upgrading of the site. The Land Council constructed a weather shelter and information board. With the assistance of the former Coolah Shire Council a sealed parking area was installed.
The opening involved the Gilgandra Land Council members, members of the Coolah Shire Council and many interested community members.
Image shows local historian, Roy Camron and members of the Land Council cutting the ribbon at the opening.
